First shot at Xterra was a good experience but could have been better. I was a wreck before the start..so many things to think about and get ready before you jump in that water. I did a short warm up on my bike, got my transition set up, then put my wetsuit on. Pro's had a 3 minute headstart. The swim was OK..I never felt tired, but was itching to get on dryland and rip up some dirt. The MTB course was loose and dry with lots of short steep climbs. I passed a ton of people and came into the transition with the lead in my age group. All I had to do was hold off a couple guys on the run and I would have my invite to worlds.....no such luck. I started slow and felt some cramping in my legs..had to back down just a bit and let my running legs get under me. Once I was warmed up and rolling the insane climbs began. I made the mistake of not checking out the run course...but maybe that was a good thing. The course was insanely hard. Got passed by 4 in my group and ended up 5th.
Good learning experience for sure...my next one, Xterra Moab will be much faster!
