Running has become a big challenge for me. A challenge that I did not expect. I think of myself as a fairly healthy guy. I ride a bike at least 5 times a week and have competed at a high level. My tested Vo2 is up there pretty well so I figured running would be an easy takeover......not so much.
The physical aspect of running is more than I expected. I have ran before but never tried to get better at it. Running hurts. I have come to enjoy running trails the best, plenty of visual stimulation for my ADD and much easier on the knees. Here are some other observations:
- Buy a large bottle of Ibuprofen, you will use it
- Knees are delicate and getting bad ones from your parents doesnt help
- Shoes are very individual and highly technical...way more than I thought
- running on packed snow with spikes is very manly and fun
- Mountain Lions scare me more when I am on two feet rather than 2 wheels

Running is a bitch. Every winter I work my way into it as a means of getting outside when it's cold and dark. The first few runs really suck, but it comes around. Like you I'm no tri geek and have a competitive mtb/cx background, though I might drop into an occasional xterra or winter tri.
